ST. LOUIS, MO, December 9, 2013 – Scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center have made several scientific discoveries demonstrating the significant roles Heterotrimeric G proteins play in plant development and yield. Sona Pandey, Ph.D., (http://www.danforthcenter.org/scientists-research/principal-investigators/sona-pandey) principal investigator at the Danforth Plant Science Center and her collaborators have published several papers on their research in recent months.
Pandey and collaborators showed that “G proteins” occur in a wide range of land plants and algae. This discovery was published in the October 2013 issue of Plant Physiology (http://www.plantphysiol.org/content/early/2013/10/31/pp.113.230425.abstract).
“G proteins, alpha, beta and gamma are important because they play critical roles in plants’ development, including fruit and seed size and production, defense against pests and pathogens and response to abiotic stresses such as drought and ozone,” Pandey said. “Understanding their function at the very basic level is an important step in the process of developing products that can be applied to improve crop yield and address environmental issues related to production agriculture.”
Pandey’s research also revealed that when G proteins quantities were elevated in Camelina sativa, the plant produced more seeds, which were also bigger in size. Camelina seeds have very high oil content, leading researchers at the Danforth Center to focus on Camelina to develop biodiesel and other industrial products. Discoveries about the impact of G proteins on seed production and size were published in the September 2013 issue ofPlant Biotechnology (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24102738) Journal.
The Pandey lab also showed that G proteins function in soybean roots to affect formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules through a symbiotic relationship with certain beneficial bacteria. These nodules allow soybean to access nitrogen from the atmosphere. The discovery, which could lead to improved crops that require less nitrogen-containing fertilizer, was published in Plant Physiology (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23569109) in May, 2013.
Ongoing research in the Pandey lab seeks to understand how G proteins work, and how biochemical reactions involving G proteins evolved in plants. “The research we’ve completed to date is just the tip of the iceburg,” said Pandey. “We believe there is a lot more to learn and then apply to improve agricultural plant productivity.”

Heiser Automotive Group is prepared to help Southeastern Wisconsin businesses take advantage of an important tax deduction. This opportunity, via Tax Code 179, can be facilitated by the local dealership group. The incentive encourages businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves before the end of the year.
Tax Code 179 allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment purchased or financed during the tax year. That means that if you buy (or lease) a qualifying vehicle for business use from Heiser Toyota, Heiser Ford or Heiser Chevrolet (two locations), you can deduct the FULL PURCHASE PRICE from your gross income. Heiser can also offer competitive rates, along with the outstanding factory incentives.
“These benefits are still in effect, but expiring soon for the 2013 calendar year. As the economy improves, we’ve noted more business owners upgrading their vehicle fleet to take full advantage of the code,” stated Mary Ann Scaffidi. “Heiser is available to help speed the process as you choose from our inventory of over 1,000 vehicles.
The extensive inventory of new 2013 and 2014 Ford, Lincoln, Toyota, Scion, Chevrolet, and Cadillac vehicles are available on four Milwaukee-area Heiser lots. With the year-end uptick in sales, incentives have never been stronger. Now really is a great time to purchase or lease.
To take advantage of this offer, call (414) 577-1600. Heiser’s helpful Business Center staff is available to set up an appointment for a test drive. Or, view Heiser Automotive Group’s complete inventory and special online pricing at heiser.com.
About Heiser Automotive Group:
Family-owned, Heiser Automotive Group was established 97 years ago in Milwaukee. It’s dedicated to providing excellence throughout the customer’s sales experience. With a motto, “Anything’s Possible”, employees seek to add value every day in the community they serve.
* The tax incentives are available for depreciable tangible property that is acquired by purchases for use in active conduct of a trade or business. Additional limitations may apply, based on purchases- for the 2013 tax year. The aggregate deduction of $500,000 under is most beneficial to small businesses that place in service no more than 2,000,000 of “Section 179 property” during the year. Certain vehicles, models, and restrictions apply. Consult your tax professional for details.

In a major endorsement of the fusion energy research and development program of start-up Lawrenceville Plasma Physics (LPP), a committee of senior fusion researchers, led by a former head of the US fusion program, has concluded that the innovative effort deserves “a much higher level of investment … based on their considerable progress to date.” The report concludes that “In the committee’s view [LPP’s] approach to fusion power … is worthy of a considerable expansion of effort.”
Lawrenceville Plasma Physics has been developing an extremely low-cost approach to fusion power based on a device called the dense plasma focus (DPF). In contrast to the giant tokamak machines that have been the recipients of most fusion funding, a DPF can fit in a small room. LPP’s final feasibility experiments and planned commercial generators will use hydrogen-boron fuel, which produces no radioactive waste and promises extremely economical clean energy.
The committee of researchers was led by Dr. Robert Hirsch, a former director of fusion research for the US Atomic Energy Commission and the Energy Research and Development Agency. Other members of the committee were Dr. Stephen O. Dean, President of Fusion Power Associates and former director of fusion Magnetic Confinement Systems for the Department of Energy; Professor Gerald L. Kulcinski, Associate Dean for Research, College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Professor Dennis Papadopoulos, Professor of Physics, University of Maryland. The committee was organized by Dr. Hirsch at the request of Mr. Alvin Samuels, an investor in LPP’s effort, to give an objective assessment of the program. Neither Mr. Samuels nor LPP had any control over the committee’s conclusions.
The committee’s report pointed to the “innovative thinking and experimental results achieved thus far by Mr. (Eric J.) Lerner and his team at LPP.” At the same time, the scientists did not minimize the remaining work that still needs to be done to experimentally validate the predictions of LPP’s theory of DPF functioning and lay the foundation for commercial fusion generators. Commenting on the report, LPP’s President and Chief Scientist Lerner said, “We agree with the review committee that several of our predictions still need to be proved in the laboratory, which is what we intend to do in the near future.”
The LPP team has stated that, given adequate funding, they can demonstrate in a year or two the scientific feasibility of fusion energy with the DPF and hydrogen-boron fuel, a combination the team calls “Focus Fusion.” They expect that a working prototype generator can then be developed in a few years more.
The review committee broadly supported that short-term timeframe, concluding: “While a number of near-term physics issues remain to be resolved, it is likely that with adequate financial support these matters could be addressed in a relatively short period of time, e.g. a few years.” If these issues are addressed, “the committee does not see any fundamental roadblock to power system viability.” In other words, a functioning, economical and clean new source of energy may soon become reality.
Maui Luxury Living is one of the first networks of Maui Luxury brands to create a robust marketing platform to connect new customers with local luxury businesses to drive sales. In an effort to scale things quickly, MLL has been busy recruiting new members who are looking to utilize cutting edge strategies and technology to advertise to a hard to reach demographic: Maui Vacationers.
Travelers are engaged and sophisticated in today’s world, purchasing plane tickets through their iPhone app and booking excursions with their iPads. This is undoubtedly transforming how consumers respond to traditional advertising methods. While not all niches are the same, it seems evident that businesses need to become savvier in how their message is being delivered. Maui Luxury Living took notice back in 2011. View the Maui Luxury Living Company Commercial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He0XVsavtzg
“Many times it is challenging to deliver your marketing message to a specific demographic through traditional marketing methods because you are forced to wait for consumer response to see how effective your sales message is,” says CEO Jeff Swanson.
“While advertising in your local luxury publication or Real Estate magazine keeps your brand in the spot light, it might not always translate into a positive ROI or new customers,” Swanson continues. It seems Maui Luxury Living was looking for a way to establish an advertising platform that could easily engage consumers in a more direct manner so that results could be measured more quickly.
MLL wants to help local luxury businesses tap into the billion dollar tourism industry here in Maui. With over 3 million visitors to Maui each year, being able to leverage a cutting edge advertising platform certainly gives businesses an advantage when it comes to attracting new customers. “Because this is a network focused on the luxury market, it will be much easier for my business to be seen by a more targeted audience of consumers who are looking for other types of luxury brands on Maui”, says Bob Yeager of Heli Golf Hawaii who joined MLL last month.
Some would argue that those who are searching for luxury brands do not care about promotions and online coupons but a recent report by Finance Daily suggest otherwise. The short quiz centered around this question: Which group do you think is more likely to use online coupons when shopping—households with average incomes of $100k+, or those bringing in less than 35k. The results indicated that the wealthier household is twice as likely to use coupons as is a college educated consumer versus one who did not finish high school. The bottom line is that technology is now allowing people across the board to easily experience new products and services through exclusive online promotions.
“The premium offers aren’t the focal point of Maui Luxury Living, say’s Jeff Swanson, but what it does allow for is the targeted interaction between consumers and Maui businesses.” “If a couple is going through our website and finds a 5 star restaurant along the beach with a million dollar view, the 10% coupon is just an added incentive. If the service and food are great, maybe they’ll visit more than once during their stay or share the coupon on Facebook or with friends they know will be visiting Maui soon.” At the end of the day Maui Luxury Living brings together targeted consumers and the finest Maui has to offer. First time visitors to Maui, seasoned travelers and local residents alike now have a single portal to search out luxury products, services and activities that are of interest to them. The exclusive promo is simply icing on the cake!
If you’re looking for the best Maui has to offer, please visit Maui Luxury Living (http://www.mauiluxuryliving.com/) today. See what we’re all about. If your a Maui Luxury brand or are interested in learning more, please visit us online at Maui Luxury Living, or call us at 800-478-0233.

Los Angeles, CA – Homewood, an impoverished neighborhood on Pittsburgh’s East End, was called “one of America’s most dangerous neighborhoods” on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show in 2011. Violence, drugs and incarceration have plagued this working class community for nearly two decades. Eager to see a meaningful change in his community and a realistic portrayal of life as a young man growing up in the inner city, former Homewood resident, Olufemi Young of O.Y.’s Spotlite Entertainment, approached other former residents, Najaa Young and Rasheed Jihad, owners of NaRa Films, about co-producing a film set in Homewood. The result is the new, exciting and bold feature film, Blood First.
Blood First chronicles the lives of two brothers who haphazardly follow their father's footsteps into a dangerous life of crime and violence. When faced with serving lengthy prison sentences for their crimes one brother chooses to cooperate with the prosecution while the other does not, testing the meaning of loyalty, honor and blood. The film’s non-linear storytelling fluidly mixes the past with the present as audiences experience what events occurred in their lives to make these men who they are today. “People think of crime and violence as only affecting major cities like New York, LA and Chicago,” says writer/director, Najaa Young, “ but it is decimating communities in smaller cities too.”
The film, which boasts local talent from Pittsburgh, marks the debut of many of the cast members who enjoyed working alongside professional actors and crew. In addition, neighborhood residents enjoyed tours of the set, free food and beverages on sweltering summer days as well as the ability to meet the producers and director, not something done on the “Hollywood” films that often come to the city to shoot. Local business owners in the neighborhood also benefitted by having the Blood First production patronize them as customers for catering, meeting rooms and film locations. Producer Rasheed Jihad, says, “This film was a concerted effort to uplift our community by involving the community in the process, a first for a production of this magnitude.”
Blood First which is slated for release in 2014 boasts a powerful score by multiplatinum music producer Drumma Boy and original music by Project Pat, Big KRIT, Turk (of the Hot Boyz), 8 Ball, MJG and Emanuel “Manny” DeAnda (former lead singer of Pretty Ricky). Producer Olufemi Young says, “We were very fortunate to have artists of this caliber coming together to work on this project. With Drumma Boy overseeing the music we were able to deliver a film of the highest quality.”
Blood First has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). To learn more about the film and to see the trailer visit: www.BloodFirstTheMovie.com.
