Florida School for the Deaf and Blind Students Unveil Their Mosaic Panels at Vilano Boardwalk

Saint Augustine, FL – Six mosaic panels, created by visually impaired Clay Club students of the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB), will go on permanent display at the Vilano Nature Greenway Boardwalk in St. Augustine during a dedication ceremony on September 5, 2013.

The panels, representing wildlife from our area, were created the students through a grant from The Northeast Florida Community Foundation (Crisp Ellert Art Ventures Program) and North Shores Improvement Association/Vilano Beach Main Street, Inc.

Their teacher and owner of Hammock Gardens Nursery in Palm Coast, Janine Regina, has been the Clay Club teacher for three years. She and volunteers guided students to create the mosaics.

The Clay Club at FSDB is an after school program for middle and high school students. Learning about the nature of clay and techniques used in working with clay, students use ceramic tools to form and design each piece. Projects take multiple steps to complete, with all processes encouraging the development of motor skills. These inspiring students, with their passion for art, unselfishly devoted themselves to this mosaic project.

Beginning in January 2013, eight of the Clay Club students dedicated an extra hour a week to create six mosaic panels for the Boardwalk project. "Ms. Janine" and the students designed each panel to include texture and a three-dimensional focus. After students rolled out the clay, pre-cut poster board templates of the mosaic pieces were used to trace and cut the clay. All of the mosaic pieces were glazed by the students, prior to and after the kiln firing process. The six mosaic panels include five raised designs, each representing a green sea turtle, giant blue heron, blue crab, spotted trout, and snowy white egret. The sixth panel, forming a rising sun, includes the handprints and signature tiles recognizing the individual contributions of enthusiastic FSDB students. The overall design of the mosaic panels encourages visitors to use their tactile senses as they experience the displays.

The formal ceremony on September 5 will reveal the new mosaic panels on the boardwalk under the Vilano Bridge.  Named after Frank and Mary Usina in St. Augustine. FSDB's "Outta Sight Band" will provide musical entertainment at the ceremony. During a class discussion on the significance of this community project, one of the students shared that she was happy to be part of the project because, " ..... now people will see that blind people can do art too." These students invite us to feel their world through their hands. This outstanding Vilano Nature Greenway Boardwalk mosaic project highlights artwork created by visually impaired FSDB students on permanent display for public viewing and touching.

Additional thanks are extended to collaborative partners including Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, the St; Johns County Recreation & Parks Department, St. Johns County Facility Maintenance and Vilano Beach Main Street volunteers.

Innovative USB Adapter helps reduce charging time by half, while keeping your personal info Safe

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIb3qQGRNl0&hd=1

Do you know how fast your Phone or Tablet is charging? Would you like to have the peace-of-mind that your device is charging at the fastest rate possible, every time you plug it in?

LM Engineering Designs LLC, an Atlanta-based startup, is hoping to provide just that with their new device called LockedUSB adapter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1137339450/lockedusb-...). It allows any portable device to fast-charge at their maximum rated current, while keeping the data lines completely isolated. To cover production costs, the company is launching the new product on the popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

LockedUSB is an innovative, Patent-pending, USB adapter with a dedicated controller chip and current limiting power switch. An auto-detect feature monitors USB data line voltage, and automatically provides the correct electrical signatures on the data lines. This allows portable devices to fast-charge at their maximum rated current while keeping the data lines completely secure.

Public charging stations are becoming more and more popular everywhere you go. Unfortunately, Identity Theft, Government surveillance, "rogue" and unstable chargers, are also on the rise. The inspiration behind the product came when the designer searched the internet to find a firewall device, or specialized cable, that would provide the security he was looking for, and to his surprise there was nothing out there that offered secure charging capabilities.  “I wanted to make a simple adapter, which I could use my own device's cable, and have peace of mind that my personal data and information was secure” said Leonardo Matute, Hardware Designer.  “I have designed a compact USB adapter that completely disconnects the data lines, while simultaneously providing the maximum allowed charging power so I can charge-up quickly and safely”

LockedUSB  comes with a 3-in-1 Universal Charging Cable (USB 2.0 Connect to Lightning 8 Pin, Micro USB and apple 30 Pin Connector for iPhone 4 4S Samsung Galaxy Note 2 iPhone 5, iPad 4/Mini ipod touch 5G Nano 7th) that provides compatibility with multiple devices.

LockedUSB is now available through a 30-day Kickstarter campaign. Interested backers can receive a LockedUSB Adapter and 3-in-1 Universal Charging Cables for only $19 USD. People who depend on their phones can rest assured LockedUSB will keep them safe and provide fast charging.

"Where the Wild Daffodils Grow" - Updated Historical Novel Dramatizes Life in Tasmania

Where the Wild Daffodils Grow was written by the late Hannah Amelia Holbrook, with an assist many years later by her granddaughter, Elizabeth Rickards.

Hannah wrote several unpublished manuscripts before she died of lung cancer at the age of 53. Her granddaughter, Elizabeth, was entrusted with Hannah’s works, but never examined them closely because she married young and had six children to raise. She says: “Now retired, I finally had the time to look at my grandmother’s scripts. I was impressed and added to her first book, giving it a different title. I updated it and put in more romance, sex, and drama. I think she would be very proud of the end result. I’m only sorry that neither she nor my parents are alive to see the finished book, but I hope they are with me in spirit.”

In their collaborative novel Where the Wild Daffodils Grow, a group of people from various walks of life including convicts, make the long journey from England and Ireland to a new future. In doing so, they experience romance and violence during the 1800s through to the 1950s in a small country village in Tasmania. The story line is separated into two sections, the first book covers the backgrounds of the individuals and their family history and how they arrive in the same place. The second book tells of the Cavenders and their extended family. The book was certainly worth the wait!

WHERE THE WILD DAFFODILS GROW (ISBN: 978-1-62212-486-2) is now available for $20.95 and can be ordered through the publisher’s website:
http://sbpra.com/ElizabethRickardsandHannahAmeliaHolbrook or at www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.

WHOLESALERS: This book is distributed by Ingram Books and other wholesale distributors. Contact your representative with the ISBN for purchase. Wholesale purchase for retailers, universities, libraries, and other organizations is also available through the publisher; please email bookorder@aeg-online-store.com

About the Authors: Hannah Holbrook [nee Gillam] was one of thirteen children and had a love of life. She first married William Eaves where they resided in Waterloo, the village mentioned in this book, and they produced a son and daughter. She was tragically widowed at an early age and then married Harold Holbrook.

Elizabeth Rickards is the daughter of Harvey Mewett and Yvonne [nee Eaves], and lived in Victoria, Australia, until her early teens, when the family moved to Tasmania, coincidentally just up the road from where her mother was born. So in a way, she was going home. The author married Dennis O’Neill and together they produced five boys and a girl, including twins. They divorced and she married Robert Rickards, who died suddenly in 2005 at the commencement of a long-awaited holiday. With writing experience from a previous book about the history of local football, she now had time to devote to her grandmother’s scripts.

Local Businesses Meet with Senator Claire McCaskill to Discuss Economic Impacts of Climate Change

"As a citizen, a mother, and a professional it is a privilege to support legislative efforts that will help mobilize change in our businesses, community and environment at-large. " — Sara Greenwood, Greenwood Consulting Group, LLC

Kansas City, Missouri - Local Business owners from the Business Alliance for a Sustainable Economy - Kansas City met with Corey Dillon from Senator Claire McCaskill’s office this week to discuss the need for Congressional action on climate and clean energy issues. Representing a variety of business interests and backgrounds, the group discussed the adverse effects of climate change on local business and urged the Senator to push Congress to take action.

The companies noted that climate change poses a serious threat to American businesses.  The risks are many; disruptions to supply chains, increasing insurance premiums, structural damage from extreme weather events and rising energy and health care costs. The challenge is especially acute for small businesses, which have fewer resources to undertake disaster recovery planning and to bounce back from a hurricane. According to polling by the American Sustainable Business Council, majorities of small business owners want government action to reduce greenhouse gases and increase energy efficiency. For example, 72% of small business owners support government incentives and investment to encourage renewable energy.

There are currently several pieces of legislation that stand to address climate change.. The ShaheenPortman Energy Efficiency Bill would improve energy efficiency requirements in building codes and institute efficiency guidelines for the federal government, without adding to the deficit. The Master Limited Partnerships Parity Act, would expand investment and tax advantages to include clean energy projects. MLPs are a type of legal structure that offers great benefit to investors, but are currently only available to fossil fuel projects. Another issue is the National Renewable Energy Standard (RES) that would require the country to produce a certain percentage of its energy form renewable sources by a specified date. Currently, 38 states have similar standards. A national version would greatly reduce the country's carbon footprint and expand the green energy market, leading to job creation.

"We have to get the Master Limited Partnership Parity Act through to level the playing field with fossil fuels.  This legislation will also facilitate private investment in renewable energy." - Kevin Browne, YourStateID

The meeting in Kansas City was one of several ASBC organized around the country during the August Congressional Recess. The hope is that the Senators will take this business perspective back to Washington, when they return on September 9. With so many legislative opportunities sitting in queue, this Congress has the chance to take real action on climate change.

"Legislative action for addressing climate change is a necessary step toward improving our ability to care for humanity, our economy and the environment. It is inevitable that we will rely on renewable energy solutions for an increasingly energy-hungry world. Our dependency on non-renewable resources is unsustainable. As business owners, we need systemic support to open up industry innovation and job creation sooner, not later." — Pam Hausner, Big Vision Media Group LLC

Reilly Realtors Releases New Universal Search Tool

Reilly Realtors is excited to unveil their brand-new Universal Search tool on their website, AustinHomeListings.com.  This tool offers users a unique, easy-to-use search bar that allows them to search homes for sale in the greater Austin area using a variety of different search criteria. Michael Reilly, Managing Broker of Reilly Realtors, is excited to see how the Universal Search tool will enhance user experience as clients utilize it to search for available properties.

“No other Austin real estate website has a tool like this,” Reilly explains. “We hope that visitors to our site will have an easier time finding properties that meets all of their criteria by using the Universal Search.”

The new tool sifts through all possible results related to a specific search term, and then arranges those results into specific categories in a single, convenient drop-down menu that appears below the search box. Users can be as vague or specific as they wish when using the Universal Search. If someone is looking for homes in the general South Austin area, they only need to enter “South Austin” into the search bar to access a specific search for homes for sale in South Austin. Families looking to move into a certain school district can type in the district’s name, or the name of a specific school, and use that search to browse for homes within that area. Longtime Austinites who know the exact street they want to live on can even enter the street name into the Universal Search to browse for homes only located on that street. Users who know the specific MLS number of the home of their dreams need only to type in those digits to find the exact listing. These are just a few examples of the many ways site visitors can use the Universal Search.

“We have always put a premium on user-experience,” Reilly says. “The Universal Search is the latest innovation we have created in order to improve the quality of our site and to make our clients’ home search as easy as possible.”

This powerful tool is located in the top right-hand corner of Reilly Realtors (http://www.austinhomelistings.com/)’ homepage (AustinHomeListings.com) under the heading “Quick Search”. It can also be found on each individual neighborhood and area page.

ATS Offers Arrow Customers a Half-Day of Free Access to its Thermal Characterization Lab

As part of the new distribution agreement between Arrow Electronics and Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc., ATS is offering a half-day of free, no-obligation use of its unique Thermal Characterization Laboratory to Arrow’s customers. The Thermal Characterization Lab, located at ATS headquarters in Norwood, MA, allows engineers to perform thermal testing on heat sinks, fans and fan trays, PCBs, blades, enclosures, or complete systems. Experienced engineers, board and system designers can perform the tests themselves, or consult with an ATS thermal engineer at no cost during their 4 hours of laboratory time.

ATS’ Thermal Characterization Lab features a full range of research-quality instruments, including open and closed loop wind tunnels, for ambient and elevated temperature testing, all with PC-driven controls and automated data collection. The lab is also outfitted with a full array of the company’s sensor systems and thermocouples, which can be used to characterize electronic products under variable airflow and temperature conditions.

In addition, the lab also features a JEDEC approved component thermal testing facility for conducting multitude of device level testing per JEDEC standards. The facility also provides a complete liquid crystal and IR thermography systems for non-invasive temperature mapping to 0.1oC with one micron-level spatial resolution; and a liquid cooling facility for complete testing and characterization of cold-plates, cooling effect and proof of concept testing.

“Most of today’s electronics have thermal situations that can turn into big problems if left alone. The easiest, lowest cost way to manage this is to conduct an accurate thermal characterization of the problem at hand,” said Kaveh Azar, Ph.D., president and CEO of Advanced Thermal Solutions, Inc. “If you have the right facility and associated know-how, you can often complete your test in a half-day, then you can readily assess what is the best thermal solution for your application. For engineers short on time and resources, we believe this free use of ATS’ Thermal Characterization Lab could be very helpful.”

To contact ATS for more information on this opportunity, please call 781-769-2800, email ats-hq@qats.com or visit www.qats.com. All testing and results reporting are completely confidential. Consultation prior to use of the lab is not charged or considered part of the free time offer. ATS engineers will also advise lab patrons how to optimize their free testing period prior to arriving.

Cement Eclipses / Isaac Cordal U.S. debut exhibition at Anno Domini Sept. 6, 2013

Anno Domini is proud to present::

Cement Eclipses
by installation street artist Isaac Cordal (Spain)

Solo Exhibition September 6–October 19, 2013

Artist’s Reception Friday, September 6th 7pm–11pm

With the simple act of miniaturization and thoughtful placement, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians finding his sculptures on the street. Cement Eclipses is a critical definition of our behavior as a social mass. The art work intends to catch the attention on our devalued relation with the nature through a critical look to the collateral effects of our evolution. With the master touch of a stage director, the figures are placed in locations that quickly open doors to other worlds. The scenes zoom in the routine tasks of the contemporary human being.

Men and women are suspended and isolated in a motion or pose that can take on multiple meanings. The sympathetic figures are easy to relate to and to laugh with. They present fragments in which the nature, still present, maintains encouraging symptoms of survival. The precariousness of these anonymous statuettes, at the height of the sole of the passers, represents the nomadic remainders of an imperfect construction of our society. These small sculptures contemplate the demolition and reconstruction of everything around us. They catch the attention of the absurdity of our existence.

Isaac Cordal is sympathetic toward his little people and you can empathize with their situations, their leisure time, their waiting for buses and even their more tragic moments such as accidental death, suicide or family funerals. The sculptures can be found in gutters, on top of buildings, on top of bus shelters; in many unusual and unlikely places in Barcelona (Spain), Nantes (France), Brussels (Belgium), Berlin (Germany), London (UK), Vienna (Austria), Zagreb (Croatia) and now, San Jose (US). Isaac Cordal was born in Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain) and currently lives in Brussels (Belgium.)

Cement Eclipses Anno Domini is Cordal’s debut solo exhibition in the United States.

"Writer in Residence" expedition promotes writing, reading and travel

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Jacquée Thomas, known as Jacquée T., arrives via train just before midnight in Lawrence Kansas, Thursday September 12, 2013.

Lipstick refreshed, creases in her navy blue polka dot skirt smoothed, she deboards the train and begins the next chapter in her life.

This is the first stop on her "Writer in Residence" actual and virtual expedition. In her "satchel" per se, are a library of stories being prepped for Kindle Books, and an open-slate travelogue.

Next stop could be anywhere in the world. Her maiden venture takes us to Kansas where she meets with her favorite and most trusted editor, to close chapters on short stories and narratives and bring them to publication. Our maven of romance also explores the greater Lawrence area inns and environment.

Featured will be the Writer in Residence travelogue and Kindle book updates via Jacquée T.'s web site A Romantic's Perspective.com Travel page and "Vignettes" weblog.

'The Writer'
Jacquée T. is an authoress, poetess, former newspaper columnist, and the voice behind A Romantic's Perspective.com.

She lives life by the moment and offers a literary perspective that appeals to both men's and women's passion.

Miss T. loves to travel, and finds it overwhelmingly, on-her-knees inspiring. She embarks on "Writer in Residence" to fuel inspiration for her Kindle book stories, and to share in a travelogue.

'In Residence''
Miss T. finds inspiring places to sojourn, to behold new landscapes and new experiences. For example, she stays at Circle S Ranch, 20 miles outside Lawrence proper, to love the Kansas prairie and the little luxuries Circle S offers, and shares them via Romantic's Travel features and Vignettes.

Her "Residence" experiences become part of the Writer in Residence story.

The 'Writer in Residence' Story unfolds
Jacquée T. takes the Amtrak train "Southwest Chief" from Chicago to Lawrence and arrives around midnight. Her editor Malcolm Gibson and his wife Joyce greet her.

In Miss T.'s purse, per se, are the stories gracefully awaiting the final oomph before made public:
--- Three 'Ladie's Stories: a trio of short stories," and
--- the focus project For the Love of Chocolate. The first chapter is a story in itself, and to be released as a prelude to a novelette.

And this country gal who grew up in southeast Minnesota and moved to the big city, lands in a smaller city and is open for adventure.

More information
Jacquée T.'s "Writer in Residence" is an actual and virtual expedition. Follow it via the Travel section and Vignettes weblog, at A Romantic's' Perspective (http://ARomanticsPerspective.com).
