“We are honored to be working with the Air Force Research Laboratory to create this new technology, and look forward to helping customers in other industries realize the benefits of large-area optical sapphire windows.”
Existing methods used to produce sapphire windows do not meet all the demands of military applications. Rubicon Technology has developed an entirely new growth platform specifically to produce very large polished sapphire infrared (IR) windows for the Air Force Research Laboratory. Production will be scaled to meet the current and future requirements of the Air Force, beginning with intermediate sizes and progressing to windows as large as 36 x 18 x 0.8 inches. These sapphire windows will meet a variety of needs in both government and private sector applications.
Sapphire is a desirable material for military and other high-performance applications due to its hardness and strength, transparency in the visible and IR spectrum, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance, high melting point and chemical inertness. As a result, it is ideally suited for IR windows in extreme environments where material durability is just as important as optical clarity.
“Sapphire’s exceptional physical and optical qualities offer many benefits in applications such as military IR windows,” noted Raja M. Parvez, President and CEO of Rubicon Technology. “However, producing high-quality sapphire large enough for such applications has proven difficult. So Rubicon drew on more than a decade of experience and our culture of innovation in crystal growth technology to develop an entirely new platform to address this need. This research sets the stage for many defense and industrial applications for large sapphire windows of exceptional optical quality.
“We are honored to be working with the Air Force Research Laboratory to create this new technology, and look forward to helping customers in other industries realize the benefits of large-area optical sapphire windows.”
Existing growth technologies that produce large-area sapphire crystals are incapable of generating the thickness required for demanding defense applications. Rubicon’s new technological platform will grow panels approximately two inches thick, which can be cut into multiple windows of varying thickness to meet the needs of the industry. The platform developed through the LANCE project is distinct from Rubicon’s highly regarded ES2 crystal growth technology, which will remain the platform for Rubicon’s C-plane sapphire used in the LED industry and R-plane sapphire for Silicon-on-Sapphire RFIC applications.
About Rubicon Technology
Rubicon Technology, Inc. is an advanced electronic materials provider that is engaged in developing, manufacturing and selling monocrystalline sapphire and other crystalline products for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), blue laser diodes, optoelectronics and other optical applications. Rubicon is a vertically-integrated manufacturer with capabilities in crystal growth, high precision core drilling, wafer slicing, surface lapping, large-diameter polishing and wafer cleaning processes, which the Company employs to convert the bulk crystal into products with the quality and precision specified by its customers. The Company is the world leader in larger diameter products to support next-generation LED, RFIC and optical window applications.

“MEMS is everywhere. From smartphones, tablets and video games to automotive stability control systems, airbag crash sensors and blood-pressure monitors, we are using MEMS to improve our everyday lives in ways that we could have scarcely imagined just a few years ago”
“MEMS is everywhere. From smartphones, tablets and video games to automotive stability control systems, airbag crash sensors and blood-pressure monitors, we are using MEMS to improve our everyday lives in ways that we could have scarcely imagined just a few years ago,” said Karen Lightman, managing director, MIG. “At MEMS Executive Congress 2012, we will take a collective look beyond the mainstream applications of MEMS. Will smartphones become intelligent aids for people with Alzheimer’s or autism? Will we still ‘drive’ or will MEMS-enabled automobiles safely guide us to and from our destinations on MEMS-enabled roads? And where is my MEMS-enabled personal robotic assistant? At MEMS Executive Congress, we will tap some of the most influential, innovative minds in the industry to examine the most pressing business issues affecting the future of MEMS. We will also get up close to some of the best examples of the MEMS inside the machine during our popular MEMS Technology Showcase.”

Gilman Law LLP is offering legal assistance to all victims of Imprelis tree damage, including tree farms, residential property owners, tree nurseries and forests, golf courses, composting sites, turf managers and professional landscapers, parks, schools, and college campuses. The firm urges consumers who have lost trees following an application of Imprelis to contact Gilman Law LLP before they agree to accept any compensation offer from DuPont. Imprelis tree damage victims are advised to seek legal counsel immediately to ensure their state’s statute of limitations governing Imprelis lawsuits does not expire. Once the statute of limitations has passed, Imprelis tree damage victims will no longer be eligible to recover compensation from DuPont.
Imprelis Tree Damage Lawsuit Details
According to the Imprelis lawsuit filed by Gilman Law LLP, a professional lawn care company applied Imprelis to the lead Plaintiff’s lawn because “it was marketed as the most environmentally friendly weed control product ever manufactured.” Since then, multiple trees located on Plaintiff’s property have begun to display the signature signs of distress and Imprelis induced damage. The lawsuit alleges that Imprelis has been applied to thousands, if not tens of thousands, of lawns and other properties including but not limited to tree farms, golf courses, and nurseries. Property owners paid for lawn treatment services that included Imprelis in order to treat their property for weeds, and to protect their property’s aesthetic. The complaint alleges that this protection came at the high price of damage and/or death of mature and valuable landscape trees that are now an eyesore on their property.
Imprelis, which was conditionally registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August 2010, is the brand name for aminocyclopyrachlor, a selective herbicide intended to kill unwanted broad leaf weeds, including dandelions, clovers, ground ivy, and wild violets, without damaging other desirable, non-target vegetation. Imprelis has been advertised, marketed, and sold to lawn-product consumers as being both highly effective and environmentally friendly. However, according to the lawsuit, reports had emerged by May 2011 of dead and dying landscape trees associated with the application Imprelis. DuPont issued a letter to turf managers in June 2011 stating it was investigating the problems. By July 2011, the EPA had launched an investigation. A month later, the agency issued a Stop Sale and Removal Order for Imprelis. By that time, DuPont had submitted more than 7,000 adverse incident reports to the EPA involving Imprelis in Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Wisconsin, West Virginia and other states. [epa.gov/compliance/resources/cases/civil/fifra/dupontimprelis.html]
How to File a Claim for Imprelis Tree Damage
Thousands of consumers who lost trees to Imprelis have already joined lawsuits pending in a consolidated litigation in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (MDL 2284). Consumers who sustained damage as a result of DuPont’s Imprelis herbicide must seek legal counsel now to ensure that they are fairly compensated for their dead and dying trees. For a free Imprelis lawsuit consultation, please contact the consumer protection lawyers at Gilman Law LLP today by visiting our Imprelis Lawsuit Claims Center, or calling Toll Free at (888) 252-0048.

“Our new PeakForce KPFM mode combines leading-edge spatial resolution with unprecedented sensitivity and accuracy in work function measurements.”
“Our research and industrial customers have increasing needs for quantitative nanoscale property measurements,” said Mark R. Munch, Ph.D., President of Bruker Nano Surfaces Division. “Our new PeakForce KPFM mode combines leading-edge spatial resolution with unprecedented sensitivity and accuracy in work function measurements.”
“We are committed to move AFM beyond just imaging contrast to quantitative electrical and mechanical property maps,” added David V. Rossi, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Bruker's AFM Business Unit. “To enable this advance, we are building on our exclusive PeakForce Tapping technology with PeakForce QNM®, PeakForce TUNA™, and now PeakForce KPFM.”
About PeakForce KPFM
The PeakForce KPFM accessory is an optional addition available for the Dimension Icon® and MultiMode® 8 AFMs. It includes the complete set of KPFM detection mechanisms (amplitude and frequency modulation), in conjunction with both TappingMode and Peak Force Tapping, as well as the ability to perform KPFM measurements over an extended voltage range. Its signature PeakForce KPFM mode combines FM-KPFM detection with PeakForce Tapping technology. This combination enables more sensitive potential detection with optimized probes. In each episode, Adkins visits with three hometown heroes to learn about and acknowledge their efforts, and surprise them with something special to help them continue their good work. As a bonus, Adkins hosts the local heroes as special guests at his concert in their hometown.
Overcoming his own life-changing experiences, Adkins has emerged a tireless supporter of U.S. troops and many other worthy causes. It was his desire to spotlight the good works of others that led him to GAC with his concept for the new series.
“A lot of people get attention for the wrong reasons but the true measure of a hero is serving others. On Great American Heroes, I will introduce the real people who fit that bill,” said Adkins. “They devote themselves to others and deserve all the applause we can give them. These heroes will inspire you, make your heart swell and your eyes tear up. This show does more than tell some good stories, it affirms our faith in others.”
Great American Heroes will highlight the work of local champions in ten communities. In Salina, Kan., Adkins meets a local minister who started a carpentry shop to teach wood-working skills to homeless men. In Charleston, S.C., he tells the story of a 13-year old girl who creates community vegetable gardens and donates the harvest to feed people in need. In Davenport, Iowa, Adkins showcases the work of two sets of parents who develop programs for special needs children.
“Great American Heroes reflects the values and the lifestyles of real people who epitomize what ‘living country’ is all about,” said Sarah Trahern, senior vice president and general manager of GAC. “The stories we’ll show will leave a lasting impression on GAC viewers.”

“Epigenetics R&D Pipeline - Histone Deacetylases (HDACs) Offer the Most Promising Targets and Outnumber Other Classes of Epigenetic Targets”
Scientific Study into Epigenetics Could Offer a Medical Breakthrough for Cancer Treatment.
Epigenetics is emerging as a key determinant of cellular differentiation, playing a vital role in a number of human diseases, according to a new report by pharmaceutical experts GBI Research.
The new report* examines epigenetics, which refers to a selective regulation of gene expression within different cells that does not affect the genomic makeup of the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) sequence.
The last few years have seen a surge in research into epigenetic modification of the chromatin within a cell's genome. Epigenetic changes appear to regulate differentiation of stem cells as well as giving rise to malignant cells, which include cancerous cells. Given the huge market potential and considerable unmet need, it is unsurprising that almost every major pharmaceutical company has an epigenetic program in oncology. The growing number of cancer patients worldwide offers a lucrative market for epigenetic-based molecules, and the successful launch of just one drug could generate huge revenues.
Despite the field's optimism and the boom in epigenetic research over the last decade, however, several critical challenges need to be addressed before epigenetics is seen as a viable treatment option and a potential business investment.
Epigenetic targets are structurally complex, requiring a great deal of work to be characterized, and investigations into innovative drug discovery against new targets involve a high level of risk. The toxicity of epigenetic-derived drugs is an important challenge for researchers and investors, as currently marketed epigenetic-based drugs can cause serious adverse effects, and these risks have led to a low uptake of epigenetic therapies in the market.

The Iran Freight Transport Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, freight transportation associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Iran's freight transportation industry.
BMI is forecasting a recession in Iran in 2012 and 2013 as the Middle Eastern country struggles to maintain itself economically in the face of sanctions against its crude oil exports, the primary source of revenue in the country. Despite this BMI's freight transport team projects growth at the country's primary container port Bandar Abbas, albeit at less than 1%. The other freight modes of air, rail and road are to experience similarly sedate growth this year.
Headline Industry Data:
- 2012 Port of Bandar Abbas throughput growth forecast is 0.6% and is forecast to average 3.0% a year to 2016.
- 2012 rail freight tonnes-km growth forecast is 1.5% and is projected to average 1.9% over the forecast period.
- 2012 air freight tonnes-km growth forecast is 0.6% and will average 0.7% a year to 2016.
- 2012 total trade is forecast to experience a real contraction of 14.5% in 2012, followed by a contraction of 8.0% in 2013, before returning to growth in 2014.
Key Industry Trends Iran Agrees To Connect Tajikistan To Ocean Iran's foreign minister Ali-Akbar Salehi revealed on March 8 that the government has agreed to link Tajikistan with the ocean, with the aim of enhancing the landlocked country's trade activities. During a meeting with his Tajikistani counterpart, Hamrokhon Zarif, Salehi said the Iranian government would help the capital, Dushanbe, improve its transit roads. Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had earlier commented that Tehran and Dushanbe share common languages, religions and cultural similarities.
Iran Air To Sell Half Of Its Shares Farhad Parvaresh, the managing director of Iran's state-owned flag carrier Iran Air, announced on February 26 2012 that the company intends to sell a 50% plus one share stake by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 19 2012). The total value of the stake is currently worth IRR14.4trn (USD1.16bn), Parvaresh added.

“India Baby Food and Formula Market - Bright Prospects for Dry Baby Food”
Education plays a vital role in changing taste and preferences. It has been observed that consumption of baby food is higher in families where both the parents are educated and working. Tier I and Tier II cities are the preferred locations for baby food manufacturers to introduce their products. In urban areas, there are still many people who prefer home cooked food for their kids. Pricing is the major concern for baby food manufacturers in the country. Only one fourth of the population belongs to upper middle class and high class. India is expected to see a 30.00% increase in population in the working age group. India's working age population in 2008 amounted to 388.60 million men and 361.50 million women.
Baby juices are still in its infancy stage and facing difficulty to gain importance because more than three fourth parents among the total population believe to feed fresh fruit juice to their kids. Demand for dried and ready to feed baby food is low in states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Every year, there is a growth expected in dried, packaged and formula baby food demand with rising number of health conscious parents, working mothers and increasing company's efforts to make the product available in all parts of the country. Powdered milk forms the largest product category in the baby food segment, although it is not fully tapped market.
The present report on India Baby Food and Formula Market-Bright Prospects for Dry Baby Food gives a comprehensive analysis on types of baby food and formula, in terms of retail sales. The report covers market size of the baby food and formula market, market by segmentation and also discussed sub-segments of the market, SWOT analysis and recent trends and developments. The report also highlights major macro economic factors in relation with baby food demand and popular brands available in the Indian market. We have also compared past and present performance of the industry on various verticals and future outlook of the baby food and formula market.

The Iran Infrastructure Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, infrastructure associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Iran's infrastructure industry.
BMI View: Due to rising inflation - estimated above 25% between 2012 and 2015, later subsiding to 15% in 2016 - and continued pressure on Iranian finances following the latest wave of US and EU energy sanctions, we maintain our bearish construction industry forecast of 3% for 2012. This pattern is expected to be maintained until 2016, after which we anticipate a gradual easing and an average annual growth of around 2% between 2016 and 2021. Iran's business environment remains opaque and difficult to penetrate for any outside investors. China and Russia are, by and large, the only two countries with a continued international presence.
- The Chinese government has made an offer to build a new freight rail line in Iran, according to Engineering News-Record. The freight line is aimed at allowing continuous rail transport of goods from China, through the Middle East, to Europe. The project will cost US$2bn, starting in Tehran and running to Khosravi on the Iraqi border. The line will also offer a passenger service. Iran's minister responsible for transport is reported to have invited bids to construct the line.
- Iran launched the Bushehr nuclear power plant during a ceremony held on September 12 2011. The 1,000 megawatt (MW) plant will undergo several test stages before becoming fully operational, reports the IRNA news agency. The west has opposed any such developments, claiming that the Iranian nuclear programme is a cover for the development of atomic weapons.
- Iran's Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has confirmed that contracts have been agreed with construction firms for work on the Mehr Housing Scheme, according to AMEinfo. The scheme will see the construction of 430,000 urban residential units before March 2012. The deals in place relate to 260,000 of the residential units, with arrangements for the rest yet to be finalised.
