Montana State University is offering an online Spanish class this spring that will help professionals in all types of industry, from agriculture and mining to technology and finance.
"Spanish for Business" runs Jan. 15 through May 2 and includes the words, phrases and situations most likely to occur for business professionals who converse with Spanish-speaking employees, colleagues or trade partners. The course also covers Hispanic cultural aspects relevant to business and finance.
The course is offered fully online and is designed for students who have little or no previous Spanish knowledge. Intermediate or advanced Spanish language learners can also benefit from refining their communication and etiquette skills within the context of their profession. Students from any major and professionals from any background may enroll in the course.
The instructor is Katharina Frank Bernstein, who has taught first, second and third semester Spanish courses at MSU as well as a complete immersion course for honors students. Bernstein was born in Berlin, Germany, and has also lived in Panama, Mexico, Belize and Costa Rica. She earned her B.A. from MSU with a major in Spanish and a minor in German with a teaching option. She holds a Montana educators license and has taught Spanish at Park High in Livingston, LaMotte School near Bozeman, for the Adult Education Center in Bozeman, as well as at MSU.

Circumstellar is the first book of the new fantasy and science fiction series by J. W. Lolite. The book tells the story of Ingrid Fairheit, a teenage girl with glowing eyes who lives in the fictional town of Dust Veil, Tennessee. When Ingrid is attacked one night by two mysterious strangers, she is forced to begin an investigation into history and her own past.
“It’s taken about three years, but I’ve finally managed to get this book published,” Lolite, whose real name Joanne Hatfield, said of the release. “Writing the book wasn’t the hardest part. Since I decided to self-publish, I had to do all of the editing by myself. I really didn’t have any help. That disheartened me sometimes, but I just kept at it. I worked slowly, and now I’ve accomplished my goal. I’m so pleased.”
Lolite is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and currently works in the medical profession. She began writing Circumstellar three years ago when she was searching for a full-time job. Always a day-dreamer and a fan of fantasy novels, she decided to use the time come up with a new story series that started in the nearby state of Tennessee but extended far beyond that. One of the main features of Circumstellar is the use of special keystones to travel between two worlds. Despite the far-reaching places involved, Lolite considered this to be only a small part of the whole story. Friendship and forgiveness, she claimed, are the two most important elements of the plot.
“The relationships Ingrid makes are so vital to her development and character. It’s that interaction between characters that I think has the greatest impact. The bonds that are formed and broken are the heart of the series,” Lolite explained. “But I also left room for plenty of action and adventure.”
Circumstellar was published through Createspace and Kindle Direct Publishing. It is available in print and digital copies on Amazon and for online purchase at Barnes and Noble. THE D’BRICKASHAW FERGUSON FOUNDATION AND MOTHER BETHEL AME CHURCH are teaming up, once again, to co-host the Fourth Annual Build-A-Bike Workshop for children in the Philadelphia community this Saturday December 14, 2013, at 10am at the churchl located at 419 South 6th Street in Philadelphia. This year, twenty school-aged children (ages 9-12) will build bicycles with brand NEW, unassembled parts donated by the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation (http://www.DBrickashawFergusonFoundation.org (http://www.DBrickashawFergusonFoundation.org)). In previous years there were only ten participants. This year the foundation wanted to double the blessing. “A new bicycle is on almost every child’s wish list,” says D’Brickashaw Ferguson. “Unfortunately, in these tough economic times, every parent can’t afford to buy their child a new bike. We are happy to be able to make a few wishes become reality.” The children will build the bikes with help from adult volunteers from Mother Bethel AME Church (http://www.MotherBethel.org). The children were selected from three neighborhood elementary schools: McCall, Meredith, and Nebinger, with the help of the schools principals. Principals Rock, Farlino, and Brown were asked to identify students at their schools who excel in academics and citizenship and whose family would appreciate a free bicycle at Christmas time. The children will come to the Build-a-bike workshop on Saturday thinking they are building bicycles for children less fortunate than they are. What the children don’t know is that they will actually get to keep the new bicycle. The surprise announcement will be made after each child finishes building their bicycle. While the Build-a-Bike Workshop is a lesson on teamwork and community involvement for the children, it’s also a lesson on giving back for the adults. “Our denomination and our church recognizes the importance of mentoring young children,” says Rev. Mark Tyler, Pastor of Mother Bethel. “By working with the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation, we are able to make a difference in the lives of children in need right in time for the holidays.” The motto for the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation is “building communities one brick at a time.” The Foundation, among other things, awards academic scholarships to students across the country. It also gives grants to churches to maintain edifices. Supporting Mother Bethel’s Build-a-Bike mentoring program is another brick in the community building. “We’re excited about partnering with Mother Bethel and helping families in need at Christmas,” says Ed Ferguson, D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s father and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation. “’Showing God’s love in action’ is a part of the foundation’s mission statement. Having mentors and children working together in this Build-a-Bike workshop is evidence of His love.” Mr. Ferguson and his wife, Rhunette, are also officers and members of Mother Bethel AME Church.

Pan American Airways Global today announced that Mark Vance will join the Company as CEO and President of Pan Am Airways effective immediately. In assuming these positions, Vance will also assume an active voice on the Pan American Airways Global Board of Directors while serving as a lead independent executive for the new airline.
Vance’s appointment is another step towards the goal of making the Pan Am Airways a viable, strong and independent business for the 21st century. Vance and the core cadre of executive management will be based at Pan American’s headquarters in Manhattan, New York.
Vance comes to Pan American with a wealth of relevant airline and managerial experience. Vance previously served as CEO of INFINITE ENERGY and The Air Commerce Institute, and subsequently served in key operational roles while employed at US Airways and Piedmont Airlines.

Immigration Detainees Facing Deportation Are Wrongfully Being Denied Bail
Unfortunately, for many immigrants who are convicted of a crime, prison, jail, or probation is just the beginning. Although criminal defense attorneys are required to provide non-citizens who have been charged/convicted of a crime with the potential immigration issues involved with accepting certain plea deals.
Once released from detention, many immigrants are picked right back up and placed into detention without notice -- only to have their rights taken from them. Only for certain crimes can a person be denied bond. The process is commenced by requesting a bond by ICE. If ICE agreed to bond, then the detainee will post the bond amount and could be released from immigration detention. In some cases, the person released will have to wear an ankle bracelet so they can be tracked. In addition, they will have to check with ICE periodically – still it is better than being denied bond.
Obtaining a bond is not always easy. In fact In 2011, the government detained a record-breaking 429,000 immigrants at a price tag of $2 billion, even though most immigrants pose no threat to public safety and do not need to be locked up to make sure they show up for court. In fact, in a recent article by the ACLU, it provided the following situation illustrating the government’s lack of compassion:
“One example is Byron Merida. Byron has lived in the United States for nearly three decades and started several successful small businesses. All of his immediate family members are U.S. citizens or green card holders. Nonetheless, the government detained Byron without a bond hearing after it put him in deportation proceedings following his conviction for a non-violent crime. The government kept Byron behind bars while his immigration case wound through the courts, including his successful appeal to the Ninth Circuit. When Byron finally got a bond hearing as a result of our case, the immigration judge ordered him released on a $2,500 bond. In total, the government needlessly detained Byron for three years and four months—at a cost of nearly $200,000 to taxpayers.”
Keep in mind, that even if a detainee is denied bond, ICE does not hold the final say on the issues. A detained individual or his/her representative can file and appeal the initial denial of bond by ICE to an immigration judge, who will then schedule a formal immigration bond hearing to decide whether bond should be granted or denied. If the crime committed is a serious crime, then bond may very well be denied; but, if the crime is not violent or serious in nature and the detainee has not proven to be a habitual criminal, usually a reasonable bond amount will be set.
In assessing whether a bond will be issued, the judge will consider various issues:
· Is there a risk of flight or any kind of danger by releasing the individual from detention.
· Has the detainee been charged or convicted of any serious crimes.
· What is the detainee’s reputation and tie to the community and family in the United States, as well as the financial situation of the alien and his/her family, along with several other factors.
